About this plan
Our standard prepaid funeral plan, tailored specifically for expats living in Spain, who want a straightforward funeral in Spain.
The Standard Funeral Plan (Spain) provides the essential products and services for a simple cremation or burial funeral in Spain. It includes a basic coffin, transportation of the deceased to the crematorium or cemetery and three days mortuary expenses allowing more time for your loved ones to travel to Spain to pay their last respects at the funeral.
The Standard Funeral Plan (Spain) includes:
Appointed Funeral Director attending to all the necessary funeral arrangements prior to and on the day of the funeral- Appointed Funeral Director providing confidential advice on the certification and registration of the death
- Cremation fees
- Collection and transportation of the deceased from a place of residence, a care home, hospital or resting place in Spain to the mortuary
- Care and preparation of the deceased at the funeral home (to include full hygienic treatment and removal of pacemaker, where required)
- Supply of a simple wood effect coffin – suitable for burial or cremation
- 3 days mortuary expenses
- Transportation of the deceased to the Funeral Director's appointed crematorium
- National and International death certificate
- 24-hour bereavement line with English speaking operators
- Supply of a simple urn
- Cremation certificate to allow ashes to be taken on board an aircraft, where appropriate
The Standard Funeral Plan (Spain) excludes:
Any services for a Funeral Director not appointed by Avalon- Any costs to host the event of a service including a church service
- A wake, including the costs associated with catering for the funeral congregation/guests
- Obituary notices posted in the media
- Flowers, floral tributes, or any items requested in celebration of the deceased
- Burial plot – a plot of land purchased to be used as a grave
- Headstone, memorials, or associated costs for stonework and erection thereof
- Gifts, including charitable donations
- Cost incurred for the upkeep and maintenance of a memorial
- Any transportation of funeral guests on the day of the funeral
- List of funeral guests who sent flowers and charitable donations
- Hymn cards and order of service
- Audio or visual equipment
- Interment or distribution of ashes
- Repatriation from outside Spain
- Transfer to or from Mainland Spain, Canary Islands and Balearic Islands
- Use of chapel of rest for viewing the deceased
- Any other goods or services not listed in the inclusions section
If the plan is used in Spain, this plan does not include a separate allowance for Disbursements. If you choose a burial, we will use the value of the cremation fee for a burial fee, so extra charges could be applicable, and the plan does not include the purchase of a burial plot.
If it’s used in the UK, it includes a third-party costs contribution up to a maximum amount which is put towards the costs associated with the funeral including cremation or cemetery fees, Doctor’s fees or Minister’s fees.
There may be extra charges at the time of the funeral for other items not covered by the plan.

If you choose to pay for your funeral plan in instalments, you could benefit from the Avalon Promise. Avalon will still provide all the services included in your plan if you pass away before your plan is fully paid if:
- You die as a result of an accident at any time
- When you die your plan has already been in place for 12 months for a UK plan or 18 months for one of our Europe plans
This means your loved ones won’t have to make up the difference for the cost of the services in the plan and can focus on celebrating your life, instead of worrying about finding the money to pay for your funeral.

The Price of a Funeral
The Standard Funeral Plan (Spain) is priced at €3995. When you purchase an Avalon funeral plan, you lock in this price with us. It’s important to note that we don’t typically expect you to use the plan immediately. However, if you do require a funeral right away, the cost of this plan is comparable to the current average price of a funeral if you were to arrange it directly at the time of need.
At the time of sale, Avalon assigns your plan to a specific Funeral Director(s) and has negotiated a contractual price for the various costs involved in providing your funeral. These Funeral Director costs vary depending on factors like region and plan type, but for this particular type of plan, the approximate Funeral Director cost is €2,750* plus an annual adjustment to account for inflation, based on today’s prices.
Unlike the fixed plan price you pay, the “at need” price for a funeral today is likely to increase each year due to inflation until the time you actually require the funeral. The contracted costs to Avalon are adjusted for inflation annually to reflect the expected future changing prices in the industry.

What does “dual certification” mean, and do I need to live in both places?
Dual Certification allows you to nominate a second address in one of the countries we operate in (current UK, Portugal, Spain, or Cyprus) where Avalon can appoint a local Funeral Director to deliver the services listed on the plan certificate.
It should be noted that the services differ in each country to account for local customs and prices – your plan terms and conditions will tell you what your equivalent plan is. You don’t have to live in both addresses, you just have to be able to receive post there – the Avalon Appointed Funeral Director will be allocated within the locality of the address you provide us; if at the time of need we need to change the Avalon Appointed Funeral Director, there may be additional charges.
