Denis Price served his country bravely and honourably throughout World War II. After his wife died, in 2009, he was left with no family.
So, when Denis died at the age of 89 on 26 September 2014 at a Birmingham hospice, his close friend, Dormston Cook, feared that the ex-soldier may not get the funeral he deserved.
Denis’ story touched the hearts of many, triggering a media campaign that resulted in a worthy send off for the war hero. Over 100 people attended the funeral, including service men and former soldiers. Conducting the service, the Reverend spoke of Denis’ exploits as a runner – he was dubbed the fasted man in Birmingham.
To coincide with Denis’ military-style funeral at Worcester Crematorium, RAF Brize Norton sent a Hercules, which circled over three times. The fly-by was arranged by a former RAF squadron leader who had heard about the funeral on Twitter.
Denis was a sniper in the initial wave of men sent to the beaches of Normandy in June 1944. After the war, he lived the rest of his life in Birmingham, enjoying a long and successful career at the car maker, Rover.
